The predecessor of Hitotsubashi University was the Business Law Workshop founded in 1875 by Japanese thinkers Yuri Mori and Yukichi Fukuzawa. In 1920, it was changed to the old Tokyo University of Commerce. It was the first business university in Japan and the first of the three old business universities. In 1949 it was changed to a new university with a more modern name. In 2004, it was restructured into Hitotsubashi University, a national university corporation. In 2019, it was established as a designated unit of national college legal persons. For more than 140 years since its establishment, the school has trained many political and business people. Most of the leaders of Japan's financial industry have graduated from the school, so it enjoys the reputation of "the cradle of financial leaders".
Hitotsubashi University, as a small-scale Japanese elite university of humanities and social sciences, is similar in nature to schools such as the London School of Economics and Political Science, with only 4,500 undergraduates and 2,100 graduate students. Hitotsubashi University has only four undergraduate departments, namely economics, law, business and society, and the university has also added language and cultural studies and international and public affairs studies.
